Leadership and the Law of Relationships - Tanya Harris
Inspirational Leadership involves motivating others to do what you want them to do because they want to do it. So how do you get people to do what you want to do, especially when you know that not everyone has the same desires, values and thoughts? One sure fact is, if you fail to recognise people's differences there is a good chance that you have failed to motivate them. So many of our leaders are leading in a style that only meets their needs but fails to address the needs of a staff member and this is a key ingredient to poor work performance and lack of employee engagement. To lead effectively it is important that you communicate and match the behaviour style of an individual team member, meeting their needs provides a true connection, they feel good, they respond and results power along. These skills can be learned as much as any other skill and the following theory allows you to quickly identify the needs of a person at any given moment in time.
There are four broad behavioural styles. No style is superior to another and most people are a combination of styles. Once you have learnt how to identify these styles, you can better communicate, without judgment, in a positive way to motivate your staff within a positive work environment. The four behavioural types are:
Blue: Relationship builders, need to feel part of the group and sensitive to the needs of others
Gold: Organisers who like to be prepared, of service, they are helpful and trustworthy
Green: Conceptual thinkers, they are calm under pressure, task orientated, reserved and talk facts
Orange: The doers, full of energy, self motivated impulsive, tests the limits and natural entertainers
Blueneeds to be able to develop close, warm, friendly relationships.Encourage them to participate in decision making whenever possible.Ensure plenty of friendly comments and keep competition to a minimum, fulfill their needs with plenty of group interactions and talk times.
Gold likes to be organised and prepared.Provide them with clear guidelines and introduce new subjects or procedures in a chronicle and concrete manner.Allow them to be useful and acknowledge them for their outstanding performance.
Green need a degree of freedom as they need to be independent, involve them with natural problem solving, seek their opinions,Recognise their contributions by taking the time to listen, limit praise and maintain an easy going attitude.
Orange likes exciting fast-moving environments which build relationships and stimulates the imagination. They appreciate prestige, social recognition and the chance to associate with those important to them, let them have some fun.
Recognising the needs of others, without passing judgment is the first step to improving leadership skills and team communications. The second step is about recognising your own leadership/communication behaviour, in other words, how others ‘see’ and ‘hear’ you and the final step adapt your communication style to motivate and inspire others.Follow these simple steps and the rewards of a team that is rock solid, resilient and flexible is well worth the effort.
