Elka Graham
Australian swimming champion

After 7 years of being at the top Elka Graham is one of Australia's brightest and shining stars in swimming.

 

Announcing her retirement only months ago Elka is currently making the move into media and television and is currently in demand on the speaking circuit. Her 7 year career saw her work in the television arena with roles on Fox sports, Ch 7, 9 and 10. Elka also modelled for many magazines including Cleo, Marie Clare and Alpha and was also the face of AJC spring racing carnival in 2004.

 

Holding 2 Australian and Commonwealth records, she is the current 400m Freestyle short course record holder. A dual Olympian both Sydney 2000 & Athens 2004 and silver medalist, she has also come home with medals from World Championships, Commonwealth Games, World Cup and Pan Pacific championships. In 2001 she recorded the fastest swim in the 200m Freestyle and became number one in the world. 2001-2004 saw her top 3 in the world for both the 200m and 400m freestyle and in 2003 she won gold in the 200m, 400m and 800m at the World Cup marginally missing the world records. Elka came away with over 10 Australian Championship Gold medals both long and short course. 

 

With her positive outlook and vibrant personality, Elka survived a month in hospital after she was diagnosed with a heart condition, she went on to World Championships in 2003 only one month later and came home a multiple medallist.

 

A big supporter of the heart foundation, Elka's passion lies in dedicating her time to those in need. Elka is not daunted by future expectations many have placed upon her, she is energetic, vivacious and articulate, with an infectious smile and great sense of humour.

 

She sees life as a challenge, thrives on pressure and uses her enthusiasm to turn any situation into a positive. With maturity and experience beyond her years, Elka Graham is an asset to Australian sport and an inspirational role model for all people.
